For those who may not know my Tom, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease about 6 years ago. He was an avid cyclist navigating from lake areas and mountain trails, challenging himself with extensive hill climbs, and 20 mile rides within an hour on his road bikes. He would set up camp for weekend cycling/canoeing/fishing adventures, worked as a general contractor and was an amazing wood craftsman. This is just a few things he had to offer. His heart very much desires to be able to still do these things, but his body will not cooperate. He has so much knowledge in many areas. For the sake of keeping this post short and to the point, I'll spare the details and challenges of this disease as far as how it has altered both of our lives. Probably will share some of those moments in future blogs. Tom is an extremely private person, so in sharing details, it really is a big deal.
We've both come to learn that we can always find something to be thankful for. God has been so very good to us. A little over a year ago I was able to obtain my real estate license after serving as a cosmetologist for over 30 years. The career move has allowed me much needed time for Tom's doctor appointments and travel time to the referred medical specialists. Basically my new career allows me to be available for Tom when needed. It has also has assisted in providing a way to create Fur and Fish, which is by no means is a lively hood, yet more of a hobby as the proceeds may never exceed my investment. This allows Tom one last venue to connect and share his experiences with you as this debilitating disease progresses.
We decided to launch a concept that we feel will provide a service to people as well as keep Tom involved in the many things he loves to do. I have formed a LLC, developed a website, secured licensing and entered a relationship with a wholesaler allowing me to become a retail dealer. Doing Business As (DBA) Fur and Fish, I am now a distributor for brand names such as Case, Buck, Spyderco, and other well known knives. We are looking into more items to enhance hunting, fishing, and everyday experiences. Tom is currently creating custom lanyards to attach to knives. These are small pieces of art made of either paracord or leather. Just crafting one or two daily really helps with the dexterity and use of his hands, which is a major asset in maintaining with Parkinson's. It's a vision of his, to one day be able to carve custom fishing lures and offer on the website. Although it may never manifest it's great to include in part of the dream. Informative video content, hands on and in the field, is on the agenda as well. Throw me in the mix and the whole thing probably takes twists and turns that Tom never intended. However he is being a great sport and encourages me to think outside of the box, as the concept of Fur and Fish could not exist without he allowing me to use the ideas and personality of Your Old Buddy Tom. I am thankful he allows me this creativity. As with any relationship, Tom often has to pull in the reigns on my over the top ideas, but is never discouraging. He kindly redirects according to what he is able to do. The website is evolving as we add different inventory weekly. We are figuring it out as we go.
Keeping the shared experiences that bind outdoorsmen into a brotherhood will remain successful with your input. Share your insight. If you see Your Old Buddy Tom doing something in a video that you can enhance, let us know. We want to include you all on our journey. Make sure you click our store link as inventory changes you can stay connected. Supporting this venture certainly helps me continue to encourage Tom as he walks daily with challenges from Parkinson's. Visit our store, share our blogs, like our videos. If you see us out and about, be sure to say hello. Every purchase helps me keep Your Old Buddy Tom in good spirits and is very much appreciated.
